Roll-to-roll (R2R) continuous coating is widely used in the production of capacitor films, flexible optical films, and ITO conductive films. While offering high production capacity, these systems face significantly more severe substrate outgassing issues compared to batch-type (box) equipment. Polymer film rolls—such as PET and PI—absorb substantial moisture; the continuous release of water vapor during R2R operation becomes a primary source of quality fluctuations. Many R2R evaporation lines are equipped with only basic vacuum systems. Continuous outgassing and moisture accumulation lead to a host of problems: failure to achieve target base vacuum levels, a narrowed process window, oxidized white spots on the coating, reduced film adhesion, and—during long production shifts—process parameter drift resulting in inconsistent product quality between batches. Compared to batch systems, R2R chambers have larger volumes and higher total moisture loads, necessitating cryogenic systems with greater capture capacity. Standard small-scale cold traps lack the cooling capacity to handle the load of large chambers; they quickly reach saturation and lose effectiveness. Guangzhou Xieyi Automation has developed high-capacity Water Vapor Cryo-Pumps (WVCP) specifically for wide-web R2R evaporation lines. These units feature optimized coil designs tailored to the elongated R2R chamber geometry and support PLC integration for status monitoring and automatic defrosting. They are suitable for both new production lines and retrofitting existing ones. Many manufacturers of film capacitors and flexible optical films previously relied on imported cryogenic equipment, which entailed long lead times, expensive spare parts, and delayed overseas after-sales support. Mature, domestically produced water vapor cryo-pumps now match this performance while offering shorter delivery times and faster on-site technical support. Industry professionals are advised to prioritize cooling capacity, continuous operational stability, and defrosting design when selecting R2R equipment, rather than simply adopting parameters from cold traps used in small optical batch systems.
